Celebration of “Umeda-day” - a success of Reforesting Project in Ajuy Basin in the Province of Iloilo, Philippines

On March 29th, 2007, the annual “Umeda-day” event was held at Ajuy (Island of Panay), in the Province of Iloilo. This event is held every year to show gratitude to Mr. Noboru Umeda who founded the Umeda Foundation which has continued to support the reforesting project as well as to allow the residents to widely acknowledge the importance of environmental protection. Twenty students from the neighboring school who participated in the “Children’s Forest Program” (CFP) and approximately 400 villagers including the representatives of the Ajuy attended the ceremony.

In the year 2008, the Umeda reforesting project will celebrate its 15th anniversary as well as the 90th birthday for Mr.Umeda. Therefore, OISCA is planning to hand over the management of the project to the Water works office of Ajuy and the village government on that occasion. The achievement of the project has deepened the appreciation of the importance of an afforestation that led villagers to actively participate to fight forest fires on the Umeda mountain.

Mean while, a workshop organized by the CFP organizers at Ajuy in conjunction of the Umeda Day allowed the CFP coordinators who gathered from all over the Philippines to learn about the achievements of the project.
