On World Environment Day, 5 June, to commemorate this occasion, the Ministry Of Environment in Indonesia gives Kalpataru awards annually. The Kalpataru Environmental Award is the most prestigious award presented to people and organizations who made contributions to the preservation of the environment.
For the year 2008, nine individuals and 3 local organizations were chosen to receive the award under 4 categories namely; pioneers in saving the environment, environmental proponents, savior of the environment and promoters of the environment. The trophies were handed over by the President of Indonesia, His Excellency Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the awardees from different provinces at the Presidential Palace.
One of the awardee is Mr. Cukup Rudiyanto, OISCA-Tokio Marine Nichido Mangrove Reforestation Project coordinator of Indramayu, in the category "Pioneers in Saving the Environment". He belonged to the 18th batch at OISCA Sukabumi Training Center from Feb. 1 - Oct. 26, 2000.
Indramayu Regency has acknowledged OISCA's environmental program and nominated him for mobilizing the people in the community for the mangrove reforestation program. The mangrove planting program has already reforested more than 400 hectares in the area.
Indramayu also received the Adipura Award. This is an award for clean and green cities. That was a double feat for them.
For this year's Kalpataru, there were 166 candidates nominated by provinces with strict selections from the Kalpataru Committee formed by the Ministry of Environment.
Although this award is given to an individual, this is an honor for all OISCAns who are working for the betterment of our environment.
Mr. Cukup Rudiyanto is the fourth OISCAn to receive this prestigious award. Mr. Bambang Sudarsono, director of CITRA-OISCA Training Center in Kupang, Mr. Martin Haullussy, chairman of Yayasan ARMAN in Ambon and Mr. Mulyo Herlambang, director of OISCA Karanganyar Training Center were former recipients of this award.
