OISCA Agro-Forestry Training Centre The Center owns 4.3 hectares of rice field, .3 hectares of vegetable fields, and grows fruits. The Center has been successful in growing varieties of rice under highly adverse conditions. The area is highly unfavorable for rice cultivation due to an extremely dry climate. Director Okamura devised a means of utilizing liquid organic manure composed of various domestic wastes. The Center also runs a successful poultry farm and keeps 2,950 chickens. The Center aims to become financially independent by breeding chicks, and selling products such as eggs and broilers to the local markets.

| To
further strengthen the self-sufficient production base of the Center, preparations
are being made to expand a pig-raising project. Trainees live self-sufficiently
at the Center while they receive their training. They learn crop cultivation
and animal breeding, using the "life-chain farming system," which recycles
all farm waste products. The staff and supporters of the Agro-Forestry Training Center jointly promote the Children's Forest Program in cooperation with the Ministry of Forests. The Training Center constructed ten schools with the financial aid of Japanese supporters. The Agro-Forestry Training Center established a small-scale loan program to assist former-trainees in self-sufficient activities. The Poultry Model Farmer Development Project promotes poultry farming and chooses four farmers to receive special technical and financial support. This project is currently in process. |
